How to Choose a Margarita Mix: Flavor, Sugar, and Yield

Choose a Margarita mixer by lime character, balance, ingredients, and drinks per bottle. Here is what to look for, and how we put our own lime cordial to work.

A Margarita mix should make the drink easier without making the tequila disappear. That is what we built Cordial Craft to do: bring bright lime, balanced sweetness, acidity, and body together in one measured pour. If you are choosing a margarita mix for your home bar, start with the drink you want to make, then look at the ingredients, the recommended pour, and how many cocktails the bottle will actually give you.

Look for a mix that leaves room for the tequila

We want lime to lead the first impression, with enough sweetness and body to bring the drink together. These are the four things worth paying attention to in your finished Margarita:

  • Lime character. Does it bring the citrus flavor you want, rather than simply tasting sweet or sour?
  • Acidity. The tartness should give the drink energy without overwhelming everything else.
  • Sweetness. Look for the balance you enjoy with your tequila, not just a mix that tastes pleasant on its own.
  • Body. Notice the texture after shaking. The drink should feel complete once the ice has added water.

Start with the bottle's recommended recipe. Comparing equal splashes of different mixers can miss the point when their intended pours differ.

Know what the mix replaces

Plain lime juice supplies citrus, while simple syrup supplies sweetness. A prepared mix can combine those jobs, but the name alone does not tell you its concentration or balance. Our guide to lime cordial, lime juice, and sour mix explains the differences.

With Cordial Craft, our house build is 2 oz tequila and 1 oz cordial. No separate lime juice, simple syrup, or triple sec is required. This is our lime-forward take on the classic, with optional orange bitters for another layer of citrus.

Choosing a sugar-free margarita mix? Start with the serving

Our label lists 0 calories and 0 g total sugars per 0.75 fl oz serving of cordial. Those figures describe that serving, not the whole Margarita or every amount you might pour. The 1 oz house pour is larger than one labeled serving, and tequila still contributes calories.

We are equally open about the ingredients. Allulose and sucralose provide sweetness. Lime flavedo, the aromatic outer peel, brings lime character; citric, malic, and tartaric acids supply tartness. Acacia gum adds body.

Our ingredient list also discloses sea salt, benzoic acid, and the cane sugar within the lime flavedo ingredient, which adds less than 0.5 g sugar per serving.

Read our full ingredients and Nutrition Facts. For the finished drink, our Margarita calorie guide shows how the spirit, mixer, and serving size change the calculation.

The mixer starts the drink. The shake finishes it.

A balanced mix still needs ice and dilution. Shake our house build with ice for 10 to 15 seconds, then strain over fresh ice. That water is part of the drink, not something to avoid.

Prefer a drier variation? Keep the 2 oz tequila and try 0.75 oz Cordial Craft. Remember that a smaller cordial pour reduces both sweetness and acidity. Shake and taste before adjusting again. Our complete Skinny Margarita recipe covers the method, optional bitters, garnishes, and batching.
